NAPIT vs NICEIC: What Actually Matters
Both NAPIT and NICEIC are government-approved competent person schemes. We explain the real difference and which to look for when hiring an electrician.
What are NAPIT and NICEIC?
NAPIT and NICEIC are both government-approved Competent Person Schemes for electrical work in England and Wales. Electricians registered with either scheme can self-certify their work under Part P of the Building Regulations, meaning they don't need to involve local authority building control.
What's the actual difference?
In practical terms, very little. Both schemes require their members to: demonstrate technical competence through assessment, carry adequate insurance, maintain up-to-date training, submit to regular audits and inspections, and follow the current BS 7671 wiring regulations.
The main differences are organisational rather than qualitative. NICEIC was established in 1956 and has historically been more focused on electrical contracting. NAPIT was founded in 1992 and covers multiple trades including electrical, plumbing, heating, and ventilation.
Which should you look for?
As a consumer, the most important thing is that your electrician is registered with any government-approved competent person scheme. Whether that's NAPIT, NICEIC, ELECSA, STROMA, or another approved body, the regulatory standard is the same.
What matters more is the individual electrician's experience, reviews, insurance, and how they communicate with you. A NAPIT-registered electrician with 30 years' experience and excellent reviews is a safer bet than a newly registered NICEIC member with no track record — and vice versa.
