Consumer Unit Upgrades

Upgrade your fuse board to a modern consumer unit with RCD protection for improved safety and compliance.

Your consumer unit — commonly called a fuse board — is the heart of your home's electrical system. If your property still has a rewirable fuse board or an older unit without RCD (residual current device) protection, upgrading is one of the most important things you can do to protect your family.

Modern consumer units include RCDs that detect faults and disconnect the supply in milliseconds — preventing electric shocks and reducing fire risk. Since the 18th Edition of the BS 7671 wiring regulations, all new consumer units must be enclosed in a non-combustible (metal) housing with dual RCD or RCBO protection on every circuit.

A consumer unit upgrade typically takes half a day to complete. We disconnect the existing board, install the new unit, and test every circuit in your home before issuing a full electrical installation certificate.

We recommend a consumer unit upgrade if your board is more than 15 years old, uses rewirable fuses, lacks RCD protection, or has been flagged on an EICR (electrical inspection) report.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I upgrade my consumer unit?

You should consider a consumer unit upgrade if your board is more than 15 years old, uses rewirable fuses instead of MCBs, lacks RCD protection, or has been flagged as unsatisfactory on an EICR. Modern consumer units with RCD/RCBO protection significantly reduce the risk of electric shock and electrical fires.

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

A typical consumer unit upgrade takes between four and six hours. We disconnect the existing board, install the new unit, test every circuit, and label everything clearly. You'll have power restored the same day.
